Q. Does brand matter that much?
A. Not really, but only if you shop at a independent bicycle dealer for some of the top company brands (Not Walmart, target, Kmart and the like). The type of bike (Hybrid, Comfort, Road, Road Comfort) and model of a particular brand is more critical. All bicycle companies will have weak models in their line up. Your dealer can help you sort it out.
Top Brands include: GT Schwinn, Trek, Giant, Specialized.
Q. What is one of the most important factors involved in buying a new bicycle?
A. Without a doubt, your local dealer. (Preferably owner operated) You can you trust them to help you make the right decision for your needs, such as bicycle type, sizing, fitting, and follow up services beyond the sale. Can they help educate you so your cycling experience is positive? Don't shop price, shop value and take into consideration the level of service they will provide.
Ask your dealer the level of experience the mechanics have. Most larger shops have school kids during the season do the majority of repair and assembly work and they don't have the experience needed to properly fine tune assemblies for new bike purchases, or repair and do tune up work on the thousands of models out there. A fair guild line for an experienced mechanic would be a comprehensive bicycle mechanic course with at least 5 years experience working in a bike shop or 10 years of general experience. Minimum!
Q. What type of Bicycle is right for you?
A. There are many factors that are involved in deciding which bike would be right for you. One of the most important factors depends on what type of riding you see yourself doing now and in the near future. There are many cross-over considerations with all the categories available. It is not an unlikely scenario for most cycling enthusiasts to have several bicycles to meet their needs. To narrow down the best choice please visit your local experienced dealer and discuss your options, but make sure they take into consideration everything you plan on doing with your new bicycle. Some dealers will only try to sell you what they have in stock which may not be appropriate for your needs. Once again the most important factor in buying a bicycle is the trust and relationship between you and your local dealer.
